Emily Bowler – Interview Baker Deane & Nutt Lawyers

Emily grew up in Newcastle and moved to Canberra in 2010 to attend the Australian National University where she completed a Bachelor of Arts (Ancient History)/Bachelor of Laws. Emily enjoyed the ANU’s academically challenging environment and continued on to complete her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, and is now studying a Master of Legal Practice where she has completed Intellectual Property Law, and Advocacy.

Before joining Baker Deane & Nutt in 2015, Emily worked as an Associate to Her Honour Magistrate Fryar at the ACT Magistrates Court and ACT Childrens Court, where she developed a thorough knowledge of ACT legislation and Court procedures. Emily was admitted to the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory later that year and her admission was moved by Mr John Nader QC a former Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory who continues to mentor Emily today.

What led you to law?

“I have always enjoyed public speaking and am naturally inclined to roles that require me to be articulate and think on my feet. Law enables me to utilise these skills on behalf of others who are unsure of their legal rights or obligations in a variety of complex situations”.

Before you became a lawyer, what were you doing?

“When I finished University I moved to Queenstown, New Zealand where I worked for Ultimate Hikes as a multi-day hiking guide on the Milford and Routeburn Tracks in Fiordland National Park. I educated walkers on the native flora and fauna, provided medical assistance and general motivation (when required!)”.

What is your job highlight?

“The highlight of my role is representing clients at Court. I enjoy making submissions on behalf of my clients, addressing questions from the bench and achieving a positive outcome”.

When you’re not in the office, what do you like to do?

“When I’m not at work or studying, I love to travel and am always planning my next trip. To date my highlights include Greece, and Laos, with Canada next on the list! I also work hard at maintaining my French language skills and am undertaking a French course at the ANU. On the weekends I enjoy keeping fit by hiking and running with friends”.

Emily specialises in Civil Litigation including Personal Injury law, Property and Intellectual Property law, Employment law, Driving offences, and Wills.
